Catherine Thomas, MSW, MPH, LSWAIC

Hello there, my name is Catherine Thomas.

During our time together, I am solely here for you and your goals. I want you to succeed in every aspect that you desire and not only will I guide you to get to your destination, I will also empower you to make the lasting changes needed to maintain your success for when I may no longer be needed. As an Asian American therapist, I have the unique perspective that comes with the BIPOC community and I take pride in creating a safe and judgment-free environment.

With my experience in behavioral health, I have had the opportunity to work with vast populations such as:

  • young adults in/or aging out of the welfare system
  • working in the schools as a counselor
  • working with the court system/drug court
  • co-occurring clients with substance use and mental health
  • trauma work / EMDR
  • family systems // family systems with intense behaviors to create a cohesive, safe, and loving environment in one or multiple homes

I believe in meeting my clients in whatever life stage they are in, in order to help build and guide them toward where they want to be. I utilize a client-centered approach and tailor my therapy toward your needs.

Lastly, I am a big believer that anyone can benefit from therapy at any stage of their life because the reality is… things get messy and that’s okay! Whether the therapy you need is for a traumatic event, accountability, daily occurrences, skill maintenance, or even an occasional check-in you are welcome here.

My approaches

What is Eclectic Therapy?

Eclectic Therapy is an integrative form of psychotherapy that adapts to the specific need of the client and their goals. Eclectic therapy draws from a variety of disciplines to customize the therapeutic process for each individual by using different forms of treatment or combinations of treatment that are most effective for treating the problem.

For example, I may utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in order to meet the needs of the client.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders.

EMDR is done in 8 Phases. This form of therapy is designed around resolving, unprocessed traumatic memories, or cognitive distortions allowing the brain to heal and form new core beliefs.

Who can Benefit from EMDR Therapy?

EMDR therapy helps individuals of all ages including but limited to the following:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias
  • Depression and bipolar disorders
  • Dissociative disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Performance anxiety
  • Personality disorders
  • PTSD and other trauma and stress-related issues
  • Sexual assault
  • Violence and abuse

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is an evidenced-based modality and is used to address cognitive distortions. The theory around CBT is that our thoughts have a direct correlation with our feelings and behaviors. Utilizing CBT increases awareness of negative thought patterns and behaviors in order to create change.

Who can benefit from CBT?

CBT can be utilized for self-esteem, catastrophizing, anxiety, depression, harmful behaviors, panic attacks, and a variety of other barriers that someone may face.

What is Multisystemic Therapy (MST)?

MST is a family-based mental health treatment model developed to treat youths with presenting serious antisocial behavior (MST Therapy). While I don’t provide 24hr service, you do have access to considerable support. This modality is focused on empowering caregivers to create change within the family system that helps solve current and preventative future barriers. MST focuses on the family system in creating solutions while collaborating with natural supports.

Who would benefit from MST?

MST is for families that are dealing with intrusive problems in the family system. This theory also helps with blended families, adjustment disorders, and dual family homes.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey, I am eager to meet you.
